Karanda Water Project

PROTECT THE GIRL CHILD

Since women usually do the morning chores, girls are at a disadvantage when there is not easy access to safe drinking water. During their walk to collect water in the dark they are made vulnerable to gender-based violence. Additionally, it becomes harder for girls to excel in education as they often will arrive to school tired and thus become outperformed.

CURRENT INITATIVES

CLEAN AND SAFE DRINKING WATER FOR ALL

The Community Care team at Karanda wants to ensure clean and safe drinking water for all. As of 2024, the government of Zimbabwe’s policy is 34 homes per borehole however the current situation leaves many households sharing a borehole with 50-200 other households resulting in long distances and over extraction.

IMPROVE DECONGESTION

The goal of the Karanda Water Project is to improve decongestion. When too many families need to share a borehole, family members need to leave early in the morning while it is still dark and therefore it is dangerous and tiring to walk long distances to fetch water before it runs dry.
